Well, it is official! I have signed up for my very first 100 mile race. I will be doing the Born to Run ultramarathon in May 2015. That’s 25 weeks from now.
I told my boss I was training for a 100 mile race and he says “it runs in your family, everybody runs in your family, CRAZY runs in your family.” Then he smiled and wished me the best of luck.
Rule # 3: Don’t be afraid to fail.
I have never done an ultramarathon before. I have never run a marathon before. A few people that I have talked to have asked me “How you gonna do an ultramarathon when you haven’t even done a marathon yet?”
They tell me it can’t be done. That I will fail. Arnold Schwarzenegger said “I love it when they tell me that it can’t be done because then when I do it I can say that I am the first person to do it.”
I may not be able to finish the race but I know that just by attempting it I have already done more than many people ever will. Many people are content with playing everything safe and only trying the possible. “A ship in a safe harbor is safe but that’s not what a ship was made for.”
Like Rocky told Adrian the night before fighting Apollo, “I don’t know if I can beat Apollo. All I wanna do is go the distance.”
Which all ties in to Rule #5: Work like Hell.
Rocky didn’t just slack off and wait until the night of the fight to see what happened. He trained his butt off, changed his diet, quit smoking, improved his outlook on life, even found love (Yo Adrian!). He became a completely different man than he was at the beginning of his training. I mean, he was still himself, but a better version of himself.
Good things come to those who wait work their asses off!
I need to train my butt off for the next several months. I need to show up at the starting line a leaner, meaner version of me.
P.S. Extra motivation: My wife will be with me at my side. Yo Adrian!
