My Brother, The Ultrarunner

These are my brothers (from left to right) Justin and Mike. They are ultrarunners, which means they run very far. For fun. A week ago they made their 3rd attempt to finish the EC100, a 100 mile race from Norco, California to Santa Monica.

Wrestlers inspired me to get my butt in the gym.

This year I got into WWE again. I hadn’t watched since the days of the Rock N Sock Connection. I had never gone to a live event so I bought tickets to Monday Night Raw and decided that in order to get the full experience I would need to get caught up on the storylines and familiarize myself with all the audience chants. The interactive audience is what makes the live events so fun. Well, I started watching and now I’m a wrestling fan again.

What kind of nutrition plan do I need to follow if I want to be big and strong and have the energy to go on long runs? I went online to find out. There are countless articles of bodybuilders who eat 10,000 calories a day in order to keep up their massive physique. When I looked into what ultrarunners eat, turns out a lot of them are vegan or vegetarian. Well, I don’t want to give up meat, and it would certainly make gaining muscle a lot harder too.

Train and Gain!

That’s me a few years ago finishing an 12 mile adventure race through rivers, mud, hill, mountains, and a bunch of obstacles.

It’s been a long time since I’ve done any real running and it wasn’t until a couple months ago that I got into lifting again. For the most part, I’ve just been surfing…channel surfing.

Walk The Vote

The polling place is down the street from my house so I decided that I would walk there. Now, I’m the kind of guy who drives everywhere but I figured I’d get some sunshine, some fresh air, some exercise. It was nice. Read More….

Back at the track, Jack!

Went for a run this morning at my old high school track. This is my favorite track to run at even though there is another one just a short walk away from my house. Read More…

Make some hurting bombs!

I started week 2 of my strength training program. I lift weights 3 days a week, (usually Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday) with the same workout on Tuesday & Saturday, and  a different one on Thursday. Read More…

Tough Mudder in March!

Last night, I went to eat at Roscoe’s chicken and waffles (what, it’s my cheat meal!). It was my first time there and it was delicious. It was a lot of food though and all I wanted to do afterwards was go and lay down. On “The Boondocks” Grandpa called it “the itis.” So this is definitely not a pre-workout or pre-race meal. Now I know. Read More…

I’ll start Monday!

Pretty much most of my adult life, whenever I decide it’s time to start working out again, I say “I’ll start on Monday.” Then I eat another slice of pizza. Monday comes around, then Tuesday, then Wednesday, and I haven’t done anything, and “I’ll start on Monday.” Since I’m gonna start on Monday, I take the excuse to eat whatever I want over the weekend “since it’s the last weekend that I’ll be able to eat like this.” Read More…

Beautiful morning for a 4 mile run

“Get up in the morning, gotta thank God.”- Ice Cube.

Got to the track and did 4 miles today. Felt better running today than I did the other day but I wasn’t sick anymore today and the track is flat so no steep hills (any hills) to deal with. Read More…

Chasing Mavericks- chasing goals

If you haven’t seen the movie “Chasing Mavericks,” I highly recommend it. It is kind of like “The Karate Kid” for surfers. Read More….

This is it, don’t get scared now- Conquer your fears

One of my favorite scenes in Home Alone (tis the season to watch that movie again) is when little Kevin, home alone, realizes that only he can stand up to the bad guys about to invade his house. He’s scared as heck but knows that sometimes a kid’s gotta do what a kid’s gotta do. So as he is having what might be his last meal and the clock strikes the hour that the bad guys said they would return, he gives himself a little pep talk “This is it. Don’t get scared now.” Read More….

 Running with Billy Idol

This morning I gave myself every excuse I possibly could to skip my workout but I finally dragged myself out to Heartbreak Ridge for another 5+ mile run up and down the hills. I put my headphones on and started blasting Billy Idol’s “Dancing with myself.” If that doesn’t pump you up when you’re working out then I don’t know what will. Read More….

 Red Dawn Run

“Far better is it to dare mighty things, than to take rank with those poor, timid spirits who know neither victory nor defeat.”- Teddy Roosevelt, as seen on a statue in the movie Red Dawn.

I hit the track early this morning and the sky was red. The first thing I thought of (probably because I watched a lot of movies and was born in the 80’s) was Red Dawn. So I thought, how could Red Dawn fit in to what I’m trying to do? Read More….

Good times running with Cousin Chris

Another great day for a run. Had a meeting at work, double shot espresso, and then it was straight to the track for a training run. Read More…

Signed up for Born to Run 100 Mile Ultramarathon in May 2015

Well, it is official! I have signed up for my very first 100 mile race. I will be doing the Born to Run ultramarathon in May 2015. That’s 25 weeks from now.

I told my boss I was training for a 100 mile race and he says “it runs in your family, everybody runs in your family, CRAZY runs in your family.” Then he smiled and wished me the best of luck. Read More…

 Saturday Morning Trail Running

“It was a beautiful day, The sun beat down…I was flying.”- Tom Petty

Got up super early this morning because I wanted to do a long run. But I didn’t want to go just anywhere, I didn’t want to go to the track again, and I also didn’t want to run on pavement. So I went to some trails my brothers had taken me to before. Read More…

 Sunday- Weekly Recap

This was a good week for running. I think I have done more running in this one week than I have done in several years. Fortunately, the muscle memory still seems to be there because it has not been that hard to get back into running a few miles at a time. Read More…
